Nellie Comer Robinson Scholarship Fund

The Nellie Comer Robinson Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends in memory of Nellie Elizabeth Comer Robinson. Ms. Robinson and her seven sisters were the largest immediate family to graduate from James Madison University during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Ms. Robinson was also the youngest graduate at that time, receiving a bachelor of science degree in education in 1945 at the age of 18. She began teaching at Rosemary Hills Junior High in Silver Spring, Md. with her sister, Catherine. However, the majority of her professional career was spent teaching classes in English, history and Latin in Page County, Va., where she also served as president of the Page County Education Association. During this time, she married Saul Robinson of Luray and had two children, Starr and Stuart. She enjoyed other passions like playing the piano and organ; attending St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ingham and Luray; being a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; being part of the Shenandoah Alumni Association; and playing bridge until her death in July 2009.

The scholarship award may be applied toward tuition, fees and/or books and will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to receive the award for the spring semester, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the fall semester.

The scholarship will be awarded to the students who meet the following criteria:

• Must complete a scholarship application
• Must be a full-time or part-time student
• Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must reside in Page County
