The Marian B. French Shenandoah County Scholarship

The Marian B. French Shenandoah County Scholarship

Marian Bashaw French loves the Shenandoah Valley and its people. At 85 years of age, she has been and continues to be, active in her community and church. Over decades, she has volunteered her time and talent to serve on the boards of numerous organizations, which have all made valuable contributions to our region.
Marian and her husband, Douglas (now deceased), raised nine children on their farm in Maurertown. There was hard work in the house, barn, fields, and gardens, but there was never a shortage of friends and laughter. Marian was the heart of their home and as her children, 39 grandchildren, and 19 great-children can attest, she still is.
In the 1970s, Douglas left full-time farming and became an agent for the Farmer’s Home Administration, while Marian left full-time homemaking and became a real-estate broker. These careers gave them both satisfaction, but were motivated primarily by their desires to provide college educations for their children. It was many, many years after the last child graduated before Marian and Douglas made the final student loan payment.
This scholarship is given in honor of Marian by her children and their spouses in gratitude for the sacrifices that were made. It is our hope that this scholarship will ease the financial burden of the recipient so they might make the most of the opportunities that LFCC provides.
